Surely I can do it myself?
Some people do end up building their own web sites. And why not? Many web construction tools exist out there. And they all claim to simplify the process to the point where virtually anyone should be able to 'pull off the job'. Given these messages, many are left questioning the complexity of launching a web site. How hard can it be? If they did it, I should be able to do it, right?
Maybe. There are several matters one must look at before seriously considering a project of this magnitude and importance. How professional must the site look? How much money is one ready pay out for the best tools of the trade? And how much time is one willing to wait before the site actually goes 'live'?
First of all, one is probably looking at spending close to $1500 dollars for the best software tools on the market today. Secondly, one would then need a course or two on how to use these tools properly. Certainly, at the very least, some training using a graphics application/image editing package is paramount in the hopes of achieving a professional looking result. Add many hours of practice, maybe some study into Cascading Style Sheets, Dynamic HTML and Javascript and education into the various idiosyncrasies of the world's two favorite browsers, and one is almost ready to have a preliminary go at it! So, after some preparation time, a fair bit of instruction, a lot of money, and even more effort, one should now be ready to construct a 'killer' web site, right? Possibly.

A selection from our portfolio
Our most recent project was an on-line job board service for a company located in the booming high-tech sector of Kanata, Ontario. The client's primary goal was to offer an easy to use service for both job seekers seeking positions and employers looking for qualified, skilled individuals. From corporate identity to website launch, the job was completed in less than three weeks. Kanatajobs.com (www.kanatajobs.com) has been receiving much attention and positive feedback from many high technology companies in the Ottawa area and abroad. To really see for yourself what can be done by the Webexceed design and development team, view the old site here!
An ongoing project for us is work on the website for The Kanata Environment Network a local non-profit group lobbying for a reduction in pesticide use. We are providing them with complete Internet Presence services, from layout and design to site hosting and ongoing site maintenance (webmastering). The site is continually evolving, so be sure to check back and see what new and exciting features are added! (www.kanataenvironmentalnetwork.com)
A major project we completed was the website for the Algonquin Technology Institute (ATI), a division of one of the largest colleges in Ontario. Being in the fast-paced, competitive high technology training industry, the client needed a website that reflected the professionalism prospective students could expect at the institute. Although the client had twice previously contracted the job to a local Ottawa agency, they remained unsatisfied with what they were presented. Within a month, we gave the client a website that was not only visually appealing but well organized and easily managed.
Another major project previous to the ATI website was the complete development of an e-book service. The company, deepgenius.com, would allow internet users to purchase e-books on-line and download them immediately to their computer. To do this, our programmers made extensive use of CGI scripts, provided a custom-built shopping cart, used a back-end mSQL database to track customer profiles and provided e-commerce linkages for secure credit card processing. In addition, all graphics on the site (including the company logo) were designed and produced by our graphic designers to complete the unique look. Because the site is no longer live, some of the features which were present are no longer functional (profiles, bookshelf and checkout). Nevertheless, we invite you to take a tour of the site as it is a fine example of the diversity of web design at which we exceed. Click here to see the sample.
