What is a domain name?

A domain name provides an alternative for using an IP address to access your web site. A domain name consists of a group of characters in the form mydomain.ext The mydomain portion can consist of alphanumeric characters (a-z, 0-9) or the hyphen, and .ext can be any valid extension such as .com, .net, or .org.

Why use a domain name?
|
|
|
Each Web site has a unique address, called an IP address, which distinguishes it from every other site on the Internet. An IP address consists of four numbers that can range from 0-254, separated by dots. Although this number is all you really need to access your site, it is much easier to remember a domain name such as 'webexceed.com' than an IP address, which is a string of up to 12 digits.

What is a valid domain name?
|
|
|
A valid domain name is limited to 67 characters in length, including the dot
and extension. Therefore, if you are using the .com/.net/.org
extensions, your domain name can be up to 63 characters long.
A domain name can consist of any combination of alphanumeric character (a-z,
0-9) and hyphens, but cannot start or end with a hyphen. Domain
names cannot contain special characters such as exclamation marks (!),
underscores (_), or spaces.
Because domain names are not case sensitive, 'mydomain.com' is the same as
'MyDomain.com.'

What is a Top Level Domain (TLD)?
|
|
|
A top level domain (TLD) is the suffix that is attached to the end of a domain name. For instance, in the domain name mybrand.com, ".com" is the TLD.
There are two types of top-level domains: global and country code. Global Top Level Domains (gTLD) were created to be used by the Internet public, while country code Top Level Domains (ccTLD) were created to be used by each individual country, as they deem necessary.
The global Top Level Domains are as follows:
.com
.net
.org
.edu
.mil
.gov

.cx (Christmas Islands)

What top level domains (TLDs) is webexceed.com able to register?
|
|
|
webexceed.com is a Registration Service Provider of TUCOWS/OpenSRS, an ICANN Accredited Registrar. We are auhorized to process registrations for the .com, .net and .org domains. Names within these domains can be registered by using the domain name search box at the top of the web page.
webexceed.com also is looking forward to being able to provide registration services for the .ca domain.

How do I register a domain name with webexceed.com?
|
|
|
The registration process is an easy six-step process that is completed online.
Note:
A valid credit card is required to register your domain name.
Step 1.
Using the search box at the top of any page, check for domain name availability. During this step, you are performing a 'lookup' in the Shared Registration System. This is more reliable than a WHOIS lookup because the WHOIS databases can take as much as 72 hours to update, depending on the Registrar a name was registered with.
Step 2.
Confirm intention to register. During this step, confirm that you wish to register the domain name you have chosen. You are also shown alternatives which are available for the name you have chosen. To register one of the alternates instead, click on the name. If the name you chose is taken, you will be informed and you may click on the name to see the WHOIS information.
Step 3.
Log in. During this step you will specify whether this is your first time registering a name with us, or if you are an existing user, you should enter the user name, password and domain name you have created to identify your account.
Step 4.
Fill in contact information. You must provide webexceed.com with administrative and organizational information to associate with your domain name registration. You must also select the term you are registering for, from a minimum of 1 year, to a maximum of 10 years.
Step 5.
Review the information for accuracy. Before you submit your registration for processing, you have the opportunity to review the information you are submitting.
Step 6.
Submit your request and enter payment information. During this step you must enter your credit card billing information and submit the information for processing. If your credit card is accepted, you will receive a confirmation screen. If you card is declined you will receive an error screen, the registration is cancelled. You are free to attempt to register the name again, it will still be available.

What do I need in order to register a domain name?
|
|
|
To register a domain name with webexceed.com, you only need to specify the contact information and credit card billing information associated with your domain name. You do not need to specify a NIC handle, DNS server information or an IP Address; webexceed.com will supply default DNS and IP information for your domain name during the registration process, which can be edited at any time after the registration is complete. You can change your DNS at any time after registration.

How long does the registration process take?
|
|
|
Webexceed.com's registration process should only take a few minutes to complete. .com, .net and .org domain names may take up to 72 hours, which is considered normal Internet propagation time, until they are accessible.

Is it possible for another person to register my domain name after I have registered it?
|
|
|
.com, .net and .org domain name availability is verified by webexceed.com and other accredited registrars through the SRS (Shared Registration System), a universal database of available .com, net and .org domain names. This system prevents a domain name that is successfully registered through webexceed.com from being registered through another domain name registration site.

What methods of payment does register.com accept?
|
|
|
A valid Visa, MasterCard or American Express is currently the only means of payment accepted.

What can I do with my domain name once it is registered?
|
|
|
You can use your newly registered domain name to sign up for email services, web hosting services, register domain name servers or create a name for an email server. Alternatively, you are not required to do anything with your domain name.

Once a domain name is registered, who is the legal owner of the domain name?
|
|
|
When a domain name is registered, the "owner" contracts the use of the domain name. However, there is no permanent registrant for any domain name. The "owner" of a domain name is the original administrative contact listed at the time of registration, regardless of whether the administrative contact information has been changed since then. In other words, the owner of a domain name is the individual whose name and contact information were initially associated with the username and password profile for the domain name.
If the administrative contact information has been changed since the original registration, the most recent administrative contact information entered will be visible in the WHOIS record. However, this information may not be that of the actual owner of the domain name.
If the domain name is already registered, a link to the domain name will appear on the screen. By clicking on this link, you can connect to a page on which contact and other WHOIS information is displayed for the domain name.
